Garnet Jewelry: What It Is Worth, and Which Garnet for Each Piece
What decides the value of a garnet piece, which garnet suits a ring, earrings, a pendant or a bracelet, and what you are looking at in old Bohemian jewelry.

What garnet jewelry is worth depends on the garnet it holds. Most pieces carry small red garnets, plentiful and inexpensive; rhodolite and spessartine are worth more, green tsavorite and demantoid most. For every day, garnet holds up in a setting that guards its edges. Keep demantoid for earrings and pendants. Our garnets are below.
- Most pieces
- Small red garnets, plentiful and inexpensive
- Worth more
- Rhodolite, spessartine; most of all tsavorite, demantoid
- Ring worn daily
- Garnet of 7 to 7.5, in a protective setting
- Earrings, pendant
- Any garnet, demantoid included
- Antique piece
- Often pyrope; check for garnet-and-glass doublets
Is garnet jewelry worth anything?
Yes, but look at the stone before the price tag. Three things tell you whether the garnet itself carries the value.
- Which garnet. Red garnet, a mix of pyrope and almandine, is set by the hundreds of thousands every year in mass-market jewelry. Rhodolite is the most valuable of the reds, spessartine usually asks a little more than red garnet, and tsavorite and demantoid are the highest-priced garnets of all.
- How many, how big. Small calibrated garnets are traded by the piece, one component of the jewel next to the metal and the work. Large, fine garnets are sold by the carat, like other fine colored stones, and in green the gap is huge: large tsavorite rough is rare, so big stones cost far more.
- How the red holds in daylight. Small red garnets look lively. Past about 12 by 10 millimeters, most turn too dark. A large red that still glows is the exception to look for.
So when a garnet piece is priced, ask which garnet it is and what the stone is worth apart from the gold. Asking prices per carat, variety by variety, are in our guide to which garnet to choose and what it costs. For the wider market, see our colored gemstone market statistics.

Garnet jewelry styles on Pinterest now
Here are ten garnet jewelry styles that turn up on Pinterest in the United States in October 2026, in its trends and under a garnet jewelry search. Each one is shown with a garnet that suits the piece, as the next section explains: no demantoid on the rings, matched red garnets in the bracelet.

1 / 10Vintage ring
A step-cut stone in a rim of metal, with engraved shoulders set with tiny stones.

2 / 10Stud earrings
A small round stone that sits right on the lobe, in a rim of metal.

3 / 10Pendant necklace
One larger oval stone in a fluted frame, on a fine chain below the collarbone.

4 / 10Engagement ring
A long six-sided centre stone, with smaller stones stepped down on each side.

5 / 10Drop earrings
A pear-shaped stone held by prongs, hanging below a lever-back hoop.

6 / 10Tsavorite ring
Three rectangular green stones laid across the finger, with small stones between them.

7 / 10Line bracelet
A line of rectangular stones, all the same size and colour.

8 / 10Demantoid earrings
A round green stone in a ring of small colourless stones, on a lever-back.

9 / 10Men’s ring
A wide band with a long rectangular stone laid across, held in a rim of metal.

10 / 10Toi et moi
Two pear-shaped stones face to face on a slim band.
A style is only a frame: the garnet inside decides what the piece is worth.
Ring, earrings, pendant or bracelet: which garnet for each piece?
Most garnets rate 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale; demantoid, the softest, 6.5 to 7. What changes from piece to piece is the life the stone will lead.
| Piece | What it goes through | Garnet that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Ring worn daily | Knocks and daily wear | Red, rhodolite, spessartine, tsavorite |
| Bracelet | A row of stones to match | Uniform red garnet, easy to match |
| Earrings | Less wear, a pair to match | Any garnet, demantoid included |
| Pendant | Less wear than a ring | Any; for size, spessartine or rhodolite |
Two cautions for a ring. Large red garnets are often cut very shallow to lighten their color, which leaves a thin edge that can chip under setting pressure: choose a setting that covers it. And before any resizing, tell the jeweler it is a garnet, because a sudden temperature change can crack it.
For a large pendant, spessartine keeps its brilliance where red garnet goes dark, and rhodolite is found in a wide range of sizes. Yellow gold or white metal is a matter of taste: hold the stone against both, in daylight, before you choose. Bohemian and antique garnet jewelry: what are you looking at?
Three things you are likely to meet in an old garnet piece.
- Bohemian garnet is pyrope from the Bohemian Hills of the Czech Republic. The stones are tiny, under a tenth of a carat on average, so they were set in numbers. In the 1890s the region made elaborate pieces studded with them, brilliant or rose cut. A small cutting and jewelry industry, with roots in the 1600s, still works there in a style that recalls Victorian jewelry.
- Victorian pieces often hold pyrope, prominent in the jewelry of that era, and collectors prize the ones set with many small stones. Some, made between 1895 and 1915, carry tiny green demantoids as accents.
- Tricks against dark red. In many older pieces, almandine sits on a reflective foil backing, or is cut as a hollowback, a cabochon hollowed underneath to lighten its tone.
One check matters more in old pieces than in new ones. Garnet-and-glass doublets, a thin garnet top fused to colored glass, turn up in antique and estate jewelry and hardly ever in modern work. Our garnet guide shows the red ring test. For a piece that matters, a report from an independent laboratory names what is really there: what a lab report proves.

Choose the garnet, then the piece
Look at the stone first: which garnet, how big, how its color holds in daylight. Then fit it to the piece: a ring takes the knocks, earrings and pendants welcome even demantoid. And in an old piece, rule out glass before you trust the red.
