Alexandrite: The Two-Faced Gem

Alexandrite is a chrysoberyl containing chromium, which absorbs light uniquely. In daylight (blue-rich), it appears green. Under incandescent light (red-rich), it turns red or purple. This spectacular change is the most pronounced of any gemstone.

Legendary Rarity

Original Russian deposits are depleted. Sri Lanka, Brazil, and Tanzania still produce specimens, but fine quality stones remain exceptionally rare. 8.5 Mohs hardness.
