If you want one, three questions decide everything: is it real (not glass, not lab-grown), how was it treated, and what should it actually cost. We source rubies directly from miners in Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Tanzania, so we have handled the good, the doctored and the fake side by side.

Updated July 2026. Most stones sold as "ruby" are heated, and that is normal. The real traps are lab-grown rubies passed off as natural and lead-glass filled composites sold at gem prices. A natural ruby stone can swing from a few hundred dollars a carat to over $10,000 a carat, depending on colour, treatment and origin. Before grading charts and lab reports, most buyers want five things answered straight. Here they are, in plain terms, before we go deeper below.

What is a natural ruby stone?

A natural ruby is a red variety of corundum (the same mineral family as sapphire), coloured red by traces of chromium and formed naturally underground. It scores 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, just below diamond, which makes it one of the most durable stones you can wear daily. Any red corundum that is not red enough is classed as a pink sapphire instead. According to GIA, the line between ruby and pink sapphire comes down to depth of red.

Natural vs heated vs lab-grown: what is the difference?

A natural ruby is mined from the earth. A heated ruby is still natural, just warmed to improve its colour, and almost all rubies on the market are heated, per GIA. A lab-grown (synthetic) ruby has the same chemistry but is made in a factory in weeks, so it is worth a fraction of a natural stone. Heated still means real. Lab-grown means man-made. Those are two completely different things, and honest sellers state both clearly.

How do you spot a fake ruby?

Under a $15 jeweller's loupe, a real natural ruby shows internal "silk" (fine rutile needles), crystals and angular colour zoning. Glass and lab-grown stones tend to look too clean, show round gas bubbles, or curved growth lines. A ruby scratches glass easily because it is Mohs 9. But honestly, home tests only narrow it down. For anything over a few hundred dollars, the only real answer is an independent GIA or GRS lab report, which we cover in detail below.

How much does a natural ruby stone cost?

Price per carat is where rubies are wildest. Commercial heated rubies typically run $300 to $2,500 per carat. Fine heated Mozambique stones sit around $5,000 to $15,000 per carat. Untreated Burmese rubies with a "pigeon's blood" colour call can exceed $20,000 and reach over $100,000 per carat. Colour, treatment status and origin drive the entire spread, so two stones that look alike can differ tenfold.

Where should you buy a natural ruby safely?

Buy only from a seller who gives you an independent lab report (GIA, GRS, SSEF or Gubelin), full treatment disclosure, and clear, in-focus photos of the actual stone. A "certificate" written by the seller is not the same thing. Natural Ruby Properties: Hardness, Density and Optics

If you only memorise one number, make it this: a natural ruby stone scores 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, the second-hardest natural gem after diamond. That is why rubies handle daily wear better than almost anything else you can set in a ring. Per GIA, ruby is the red, chromium-coloured variety of corundum. Every other colour of gem corundum is called sapphire.

Two of these do quiet, heavy lifting in the field. Doubly refractive optics separate ruby from spinel and garnet, which are singly refractive, per GIA. And that chromium fluorescence is the reason a fine ruby can look lit from inside: under UV light, and even in daylight, a low-iron stone glows red. It is one of the prettiest tells in gemmology, and one of the most useful.

How Do You Identify a Natural Ruby Stone?

Here's the thing about rubies: the "King of Gemstones" title means the fakes are sophisticated. Glass-filled composites, lab-grown stones, red spinels, they all look convincing in photos. Visual Inspection: The Tell-Tale Signs

A 10x jeweler's loupe is your first real tool. It costs $15 and reveals things the naked eye cannot.

Inclusions: Nature's Fingerprint

Synthetic rubies are often flawless or contain perfectly round bubbles. Natural rubies always have internal features called inclusions. These tiny imperfections are actually proof the stone formed underground over millions of years.

Key natural ruby inclusions include:

  • Silk: Fine, parallel needles of rutile (titanium dioxide) that intersect at angles. Silk creates a velvety look and, when abundant, produces asterism (the star effect). According to GIA, silk is one of the strongest indicators of natural origin.

Luster Check

A well-cut natural ruby shows sub-adamantine to vitreous luster, reflecting light brilliantly but not quite like a diamond. This luster combined with natural inclusions helps confirm authenticity. What Does a Raw (Rough) Ruby Look Like?

Rough, uncut ruby crystals grow as six-sided (hexagonal) barrels or flat tablets, with a slightly waxy, matte surface rather than the mirror polish of a cut stone. Good rough is translucent to transparent with visible red. Opaque "ruby" rough is usually low grade, or it is ruby-in-zoisite, an ornamental rock, not gem ruby. Buying rough is a gamble: you cannot judge clarity, hidden fractures or final colour until it is cut. We handle plenty of rough on the ground, and even then we only commit once a stone is cut, weighed and independently reported. For a buyer, a cut and certified ruby is the only version you can actually price with confidence.

Ruby vs Look-Alikes: Spinel, Garnet, Tourmaline and Glass

Plenty of red stones get sold as ruby, some by honest mistake, some on purpose. The confusion is old: several famous "rubies" in royal collections turned out to be red spinels, the Black Prince's Ruby among them. Here is how the main look-alikes actually differ from a natural ruby stone.

  • Red spinel: the classic ruby stand-in and a lovely gem in its own right. Spinel is singly refractive, a touch softer at Mohs 8, and shows no pleochroism. A lab separates them in seconds; the naked eye often cannot.
  • Red garnet (pyrope, almandine): also singly refractive, softer at 7 to 7.5, usually a darker, more brownish red. Garnet starts under $100 per carat, so price alone is a hint.
  • Rubellite tourmaline: vivid pink-red but only 7 to 7.5 on Mohs, strongly pleochroic, with a different refractive index. Beautiful, far less durable for an everyday ring.
  • Glass and composites: red glass shows gas bubbles and warms up in the hand. Lead-glass "composite rubies" are real corundum flooded with glass, a separate and much cheaper product entirely.

The single most useful separator is optical character. Ruby is doubly refractive, while spinel and garnet are singly refractive, per GIA. That one refractometer test rules out the two most convincing red rivals before colour or price ever enter the conversation.

How Does the Ruby Grading Chart Work?

Grading a ruby is not like grading a diamond. With diamonds, every factor matters roughly equally. With rubies, color dominates everything. Get color right and you understand 70% of the price. Here's how it breaks down.

Color: The Single Most Important Factor

Ruby grading splits color into three dimensions. Each one matters.

  • Hue: The base color. Pure, vibrant red is the ideal. Most rubies show secondary hues. Too much purple and it becomes a purplish-red ruby. Too much orange and it gets classified as orange-red. The closer to true spectral red, the higher the grade. Gemstone varieties are often defined by these subtle shifts.
  • Tone: How light or dark the red appears. The sweet spot is medium to medium-dark. Too light and the stone might get reclassified as a pink sapphire. Too dark and you lose brilliance entirely.

Labs like GRS use it for rubies showing highly saturated, medium-dark red with soft red fluorescence. That fluorescence creates a glow effect that buyers pay serious premiums for, and it defines the deep purplish-red rubies most people picture when they think of the stone. Rubies earning the "Pigeon's Blood" designation trade at 3x to 5x the price of rubies with similar grades but without this color call.

Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight

Color drives the price, but the other factors still matter.

Clarity

Rubies are Type II gemstones, meaning they almost always contain visible inclusions. An "eye-clean" ruby (no inclusions visible without magnification) is genuinely exceptional. Grading looks at where inclusions sit, how large they are, and whether they threaten structural integrity. Unlike diamonds, perfect clarity in rubies is basically nonexistent above 1 carat.

Cut

A skilled cutter balances weight retention against brilliance and fire. How Do Ruby Treatments Affect Value?

Let's be honest: almost all of the rubies you'll encounter have been heat-treated. That's not a scandal. It's how the gem trade works, and has worked for centuries. But there's a real difference between acceptable heat treatment and treatments that destroy long-term value. Heat Treatment: The Standard

Heat treatment dates back hundreds of years. The process is simple in concept: controlled high temperatures improve color and clarity.

What Heating Does

High heat dissolves secondary hues like purple or blue, pushing the stone toward purer red. It also partially dissolves rutile silk, improving transparency. The treatment is permanent and stable. Your great-grandchildren will see the same color you see today.

Market Reality

According to GIA, almost all rubies today are heat-treated. The trade fully accepts this. Disclosure is mandatory, but heating doesn't carry stigma. That said, an untreated Burmese ruby of comparable color commands 5x to 10x the price of its heated equivalent. Untreated stones are simply that rare.

Other Treatments: Know Before You Buy

Standard heat is fine. These other treatments need more scrutiny.

Flux Healing (Heat with Borax)

During heating, borax flux melts into surface-reaching fractures, "healing" them. The treatment is stable and accepted with disclosure, but reduces value compared to heat-only stones. Most buyers won't notice the difference visually, but the lab report will show it.

Lead-Glass Filling: Walk Away

This is the treatment that gives rubies a bad name. Low-grade, heavily fractured corundum gets infused with lead glass to fake gem quality. The result looks decent in photos. In practice, these "composite rubies" are unstable. Household chemicals damage them. A jeweler's torch can ruin them. They have near-zero resale value. We personally refuse to stock them. If someone offers you a large, clean ruby at a suspiciously low price, ask about lead-glass filling.

Lattice Diffusion

This involves heating a ruby to near its melting point with coloring agents like beryllium. The beryllium penetrates the crystal lattice and changes the color throughout the stone. Stable but artificial. Disclosure is mandatory. Value drops significantly compared to naturally colored stones.

Buying a natural ruby without the right information is how people get burned. The price spread is enormous: a commercial heated ruby might cost $300 per carat, while an untreated Burmese pigeon blood ruby hits $10,000 per carat or more. Both are technically "natural rubies." Why Independent Certification Is Non-Negotiable

For any serious ruby purchase, get an independent lab report. Period. A GIA or GRS certificate is the objective record of what you're buying.

What the Report Tells You

A GIA or GRS report confirms species (natural corundum), variety (ruby), and whether any treatments were detected. It also offers an expert opinion on geographic origin based on diagnostic inclusions. These two data points, treatment and origin, account for the biggest price swings in the ruby market. An untreated ruby commands a massive premium over a heated one. A confirmed Burma origin adds another multiplier.

Seller Certificates Are Not the Same

A "certificate of authenticity" from the seller is not an independent lab report. The seller has a financial interest in the sale. Their certificate may use non-standard grading and might miss subtle treatments. According to a 2024 CIBJO report, misrepresentation of gemstone treatments remains one of the top three consumer complaints in the colored stone industry. Stick to GIA, GRS, SSEF, or Gubelin for credible documentation.

Red spinel offers similar brilliance and 8 on the Mohs scale. Rubellite tourmaline gives vibrant pink-red but only 7 to 7.5 hardness. Red garnet (especially pyrope or almandine) starts under $100 per carat. Lab-grown rubies are chemically identical to natural ones at 10% to 30% of the price, but carry no resale value.
Clean rubies with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Rubies score 9 on the Mohs scale, so they're tough. Avoid harsh chemicals, especially with treated stones. Skip ultrasonic cleaners for flux-healed or glass-filled rubies. Store ruby jewelry separately to prevent scratching softer gems.

Burma (Myanmar) faces ongoing sanctions due to political instability, and some buyers avoid Burmese stones for this reason. Mozambique mining operations (particularly Gemfields' Montepuez mine) offer better transparency and traceability. We recommend asking dealers about their sourcing policies and choosing sellers who provide full origin documentation.
The most distinctive inclusion is "silk," fine rutile needles that create a velvety appearance. You'll also find fingerprints (healed fractures with trapped fluids), trapped crystals of minerals like calcite or zircon, and color zoning showing straight angular bands. According to GIA, these inclusions are the primary proof of natural origin.
Look for dealers who provide GIA, GRS, SSEF, or Gubelin lab reports with every stone. Yes. Ruby is one of the four traditional precious stones, alongside diamond, sapphire and emerald. It is the red, chromium-coloured variety of corundum and, at Mohs 9, the second-hardest natural gem after diamond. That hardness plus its rarity in fine qualities is why top rubies out-price almost every other coloured stone per carat.
Many natural rubies glow red under ultraviolet light because of their chromium content, especially low-iron Burmese stones. This fluorescence also shows in daylight, giving fine rubies an inner glow. Strong red fluorescence supports a natural, low-iron origin, but it is not proof on its own, since some synthetics fluoresce too. A lab report confirms it.
A star ruby is a ruby cut as a cabochon that shows a six-rayed star gliding across its dome, an effect called asterism. It comes from dense, oriented rutile silk, the same needles that prove natural origin, reflecting light. Sharp, centred stars on a strongly coloured, translucent stone are the most valuable. Most star rubies are natural but modestly priced unless star and colour are exceptional.
Rough ruby is cheap per gram but risky. You cannot see clarity, hidden fractures or the final colour until it is cut, and much cheap ruby rough is low grade or ruby-in-zoisite ornamental rock. Unless you cut stones yourself, a cut and lab-reported ruby is the only form you can price and resell with confidence.
