Emerald: The Green Fire

Emeralds belong to the beryl mineral family and owe their iconic green to chromium and vanadium. The finest specimens come from Colombia (Muzo, Chivor), Zambia, and Brazil. Unlike most gems, inclusions in emeralds, called "jardin",are accepted and even celebrated as proof of natural origin.

Evaluating Emeralds

Color is paramount: the ideal emerald shows a vivid, saturated green with medium tone. Clarity is secondary, nearly all natural emeralds contain inclusions. Most are treated with cedar oil or resin to enhance clarity, a widely accepted practice.

Questions fréquentes

What makes a good emerald?
Color is the most important factor. The best emeralds show a vivid, saturated green with medium to medium-dark tone and even distribution.
Why do emeralds have inclusions?
Emeralds form under extreme geological conditions. Their inclusions, called jardin (garden), are natural and expected. A flawless emerald is extremely rare and valuable.
Are emeralds treated?
Yes, most natural emeralds are treated with oil or resin to fill surface-reaching fractures. This is an industry-accepted practice disclosed by reputable sellers.
Where do the best emeralds come from?
Colombia produces the most prized emeralds, particularly from Muzo and Chivor mines. Zambian emeralds are also highly valued for their bluish-green hue.
