US and UK sizes are rounded to a quarter size and a half letter. Jewelers’ charts differ from each other by about a quarter size: when in doubt, trust the millimeter.

Italy, Spain and Switzerland count the circumference minus 40: a 14 there is a 54 here.

The printable ring sizer

  1. Print the sheet at 100%, “actual size”. Never “fit to page”.
  2. Lay a bank card on the check rectangle. It must cover it exactly (85.6 × 54 mm). If it does not, the scale is wrong: print again.
  3. Cut out the strip. Wrap it around your finger, flat, not tight, and mark with a pen where the 0 line meets the strip.
  4. Unwrap the strip and read the number at your mark: that is your finger circumference in millimeters, so your size. The row below gives the US size.

A ring you already wear

  1. Take a ring that fits well, worn on the finger you want to measure.
  2. Measure the inside diameter, edge to edge, in millimeters. Not the outside.
  3. Enter it above, under “Diameter”. Or lay the ring on the circles of the printed sheet.

No printer: on the screen

Set the scale with a bank card first, then lay the ring flat on the circle.

Lay a bank card on the screen, short side along the bar. Adjust until the bar is exactly 54 mm, the width of the card.

The inner edge of the ring should touch the circle.

A screen is never as exact as a printed sheet. Use it to place your size, then check with the strip.

What throws the measure off

  • Time of day

Fingers are smallest on a cold morning and largest in the evening. Measure at the end of the day, with hands neither very cold nor very warm.

  • The knuckle

If your knuckle is bigger than the base of your finger, measure around it too and pick a size in between. The ring has to slide over, then stay.

  • Width

A wide band (6 mm and over) fits tighter than a thin one. Consider half a size up.

  • Between two sizes

Take the larger. A ring that is too tight hurts and is hard to take off.

  • The material

Thin paper or a tailor’s tape. A string that stretches gives a circumference that is too big.

Frequently asked

How do I find my ring size?

Measure the distance around your finger in millimeters with a strip of thin paper or a flexible tape, or the inside diameter of a ring that fits. In Europe the size is that circumference: 54 mm around, size 54. The printable sizer on this page measures at 1:1 scale.

What is the difference between EU, US and UK ring sizes?

The European size (ISO 8653) is the inside circumference in millimeters. The US size counts in numbers, about 2.55 mm of circumference per size. The UK size counts in letters, 1.25 mm of circumference per letter. Italy, Spain and Switzerland subtract 40 from the circumference: a 14 there is a 54.

What if I am between two sizes, or the band is wide?

Between two sizes, take the larger. For a wide band, 6 mm and over, expect to need half a size up, because it fits tighter. If your knuckle is bigger than the base of your finger, choose a size between the two measurements.

When is the best time to measure?

At the end of the day. Fingers are smaller on a cold morning and larger in the evening. Avoid measuring with very cold or very warm hands, and repeat the measure on two different days.

You have your size. Now the stone.

Choose a stone, then have it set in a ring made to your size.
