Toi et Moi Ring: Meaning, and How to Pair the Two Stones

What the name means, and what two stones ask of each other.

The short answer

A toi et moi ring sets two stones side by side on one band. The name is French for "you and me". The two stones don't have to match: what counts is how they sit together. Compare their size in millimeters and their depth, check the hardness of each, and give the more fragile one the more protective setting.

Toi et moi ring meaning: two stones, two people

A toi et moi ring is two gemstones set side by side, for two people coming together. The best-known early example is the sapphire and diamond ring Napoleon gave Joséphine for their engagement in 1796.

The name is younger than the idea: toi et moi is a modern marketing term. For the other styles, see our guide to engagement ring styles for colored gemstones.

How do you pair the two stones in a toi et moi ring?

Go by millimeters, not carats: two stones of the same weight rarely show the same face. Two oval sapphires we measured: 1.05 carats at 6.67 by 5.01 mm, and 1.07 carats at 7.66 by 5.20 mm. The second is cut shallower, so it spreads wider.

Depth counts too: a stone that stands taller than its neighbor can snag more easily.

Then judge the two colors together, in more than one light: blue gems look best under fluorescent light, red ones under incandescent.

Which stones last side by side?

A two-stone ring wears like its more fragile stone. Mohs numbers hide the gaps: in scratch tests, diamond comes out 140 times harder than corundum, the mineral of sapphire and ruby. A harder stone scratches a softer one, so the two should sit close without touching.

PairMohs hardnessWhat it means
Sapphire + ruby9 and 9Same mineral, same care
Sapphire or ruby + diamond9 and 10Only diamond can scratch corundum
Sapphire + spinel9 and 8Spinel: a very good ring stone
Diamond + emerald10 and 7.5 to 8Clean as emerald: no ultrasonic, no steam
Diamond + pearl10 and 2.5 to 4Pearl is very soft, easily scratched

The easy pair has two guides: sapphire engagement rings and ruby engagement rings.

What does a toi et moi change for the setter?

Two stones means two seats on one band. Settle three things before any metal is cut.

  • Points. Many toi et moi rings use a pear, and pointed ends can break. V-shaped prongs protect them.
  • The softer stone. Give it the bezel: metal around the whole perimeter resists chips and everyday wear. The harder stone can stay in prongs.
  • Repairs. Tell the jeweler what both stones are. A torch can damage a filled emerald, and a fragile stone can come out before a resizing.

Better still, get the size right from the start with our ring size tool, and have the prongs checked now and then.

Quick answers

Is there a toi et moi ring controversy?
Not a jewelry one. The pages ranking for this search describe a superstition that the style is unlucky, tied to celebrity breakups, and a debate over whether it will date. Neither is about the ring. What matters is whether your two stones suit each other.
What wedding band goes with a toi et moi ring?
Two stones often give the ring an uneven outline, so a straight band may not sit flush against it. A curved band follows the shape, and an open band lets the stones rest in the gap. Simplest: have the band made with the ring.
Can you put two birthstones in a toi et moi ring?
Yes, after checking each stone's durability. Ruby and sapphire make excellent ring stones. Peridot and tanzanite need care in a ring, and pearl and opal are best kept for earrings and pendants. Give a fragile stone the bezel.

Start with the two stones

Choose the two stones before the ring: compare their measurements, check what each one is, then decide the setting. Browse our loose stones, or describe the pair you want. The ring is made around them, at your size.
